Refugees who fled Musharrifah had to walk miles to the point where they would be picked up. Trucks kicked up clouds of very fine dust on hot cloudless days. Most refugees brought no food or water with them.

Many civilians struggled to cross the open ground in front of snipers toward the Iraqi Army lines. Those that barely made it waited for humvees or medical vehicles to take them the last several kilometers to the trucks that would take them to the IDP camps.
